Winners of the 7th Korea Toray Science Foundation Prize
Korea Toray Science Foundation(Chairman Lee Young-kwan) selected Lee Phil-ho, a professor of chemistry at Kangwon National University, in the basic areas of chemistry and materials, Choi Won-yong, a professor of energy engineering at the Korea Institute of Energy Technology, in the applied areas of chemistry and materials, as the winner of the 7th Korea Toray Science and Technology Award, and award 100 million won in prize money each.
Professor Lee Phil-ho drew global attention for presenting a new strategy for selective synthesis by extending Buchner's reaction to non-benzenoid compounds for the first time in the world, and was recognized for his contribution to the growth of Korea's basic science and precision chemical industry by leading academic development in the field of catalytic organic reaction.
Professor Choi Won-yong was highly praised for his achievements in enhancing the status of the Korean scientific community, including being selected as the "Highly Cited Researcher" for five consecutive years from 2019 by developing new types of environmental functional photocatalyst material technologies such as visible photocatalyst and photocatalytic surface modification methods.
In addition, five young scientists selected as winners of the Korea Toray Fellowship, and 150 million won in research funds will be provided for each over three years.
The winners of the basic areas of chemistry and materials are Bae Han-yong, a chemistry professor at Sungkyunkwan University, Choi Jeong-mo, a chemistry professor at Pusan National University.
The winners of the applied areas of chemistry and materials are Kim Jeong-min, an applied bioengineering professor at Seoul National University, Kim Ho-beom, a materials engineering professor at GIST, Nam Dae-hyun a new materials engineering professor at Korea University.
Korea Toray Science and Technology Award and Fellowship selected the winners after a strict screening process after contesting candidates from April to June this year, and the ceremony will be held on Oct. 22.
Korea Toray Science Foundation is a nonprofit foundation established for the development of science and technology in Korea, and has so far awarded 12 science and technology awards, provided total of 3 billion won in research funds to 25 fellowships, and has supported scholarships to 200 science and engineering college students.
