KTSF selected the winner of the 3rd Science Technology Award and Research Fund
KTSF announced winner of the 3rd Science Technology Award and Research Fund.
The Science and Technology Award selects and awards scientists who have contributed greatly to scientific development for their outstanding achievements by focusing on lifelong research in the basic and application sectors of the chemical and materials fields.
Nam Won-woo, chair professor of chemistry and nanoscience at Ewha Womens University for the basic category, and Cho Gil-won, professor of chemical engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology for application category, were selected, and the winners will be awarded 100 million won in prize money and a plaque, respectively.
Nam Won-woo, a chair professor, is considered a top-notch researcher who greatly contributed to the development of oxygen chemistry and enzyme imitation research in the field of biochemical chemistry through biomimetic research using enzyme imitators and raised the level of domestic research to a world-class level.
Professor Cho Kil-won is recognized as a leading researcher in the field of surface-induced self-assembly of organic semiconductors, and has been recognized for his contribution to international research and creation and the development of Korean science, including manufacturing the world's first high-molecular semiconductor self-assembly nanosites.
In addition, four up-and-coming researchers who challenge creative tasks will be selected and 50 million won will be provided to research with high potentials for three years.
For basic category, Cho Eun-jin, a professor of chemistry at Chung-Ang University, and Lee Ki-ra, a professor of chemical engineering at Sungkyunkwan University, and for application category Kim Shin-hyun, a professor of biochemistry at KAIST, and Oh Joon-hak, a professor of chemical and biological engineering at Seoul National University, were selected. Research tasks span various fields such as organic synthesis, nano-particle self-assembly, ductile materials, and electronic materials.
The Science and Technology Awards and the Research Fund selected the winners after two rounds of expert reviews after a public offering between April and June this year. The award ceremony will be held on Oct. 22 with only a minimum number of winners and others attending to prevent COVID-19 infection.
Korea Toray Science Foundation is working for the future of Korea's science and technology by awarding two science and technology awards every year, supporting research by four teams of up-and-coming scientists, and sponsoring scholarships to science and engineering students.
